Abstract
This discussion aims to explain existing security issues within the internet protocol and emerging security issues with the latest version of internet protocol, IPv6. The internet protocol will be extensively discussed in conjunction with virtual networks. Later on, vulnerabilities between IPv4 and IPv6 are compared. Furthermore, security tools such as firewalls, intrusion detection systems, and intrusion prevention systems are discussed in order to reveal how a modern day network is protected. In addition, the possible present and future security risks that network professionals face as it pertains to internet protocol are identified.
