Abstract
Recent work has considered the effects of Ms temperature, carbon content, austenite strength, and austenite stacking fault energy in determining the morphology of ferrous martensite. This thesis presents the results of a study of the relative effects of two of these properties upon martensite morphology: austenite strength and stacking fault energy. Toward this end, a series of alloys was designed to exhibit a wide range of austenite stacking fault energy maintaining constant Ms temperature, carbon content, and austenite grain size. The austenite yield strength was not purposefully controlled in this series.;
