    Abstract
    This thesis presents a research methodology for building a microtheory of metaphors in the OntoAgent cognitive architecture. The microtheory is a computer-tractable description of metaphors that guides an artificial intelligent agent in specific ways through a language analysis process. The thesis’ two primary contributions to the development of the microtheory are (1) a research corpus to support analysis of the problem space of metaphors in actual language usage and (2) a literature review that places this research in the larger context of the field. This work can be distinguished from other work in metaphor processing in that it addresses both detection and resolution. All methodology developed in this thesis is created to support deep language understanding for artificial intelligent agents.;
