Abstract
A directivity pattern characterizes the radiation of a given sound source in space as a function of source characteristics. Traditional methods quantify directivity patterns of sources by impulse response measurements at a given angular resolution. An alternative method is proposed to map perceptually significant directivity changes of sources over time, from an envelope comparison of minimal microphones. With this information, the perceptually significant direct to reverberant ratio modulations can be used to synthesize the effect of source specific time-varying directivity in a reverberant field. Results of a listening test show the time-varying model is able to achieve high clarity and preference over traditional stereo convolution methods.
