Abstract
Another solution for the shortage risk of heparin is a re-introduction of bovine heparin, which was withdrawn from the market decades ago due to prion concern. Literature suggests that bovine heparin is not identical to porcine heparin. This study has performed the detailed analyses of porcine and bovine heparin with a greater number of samples than the earlier studies. Bovine intestinal mucosa heparin had nearly equivalent molecular weight properties to porcine heparin. However, bovine lung heparin fell outside the USP ranges of molecular weight properties. Several differences were observed about disaccharide composition between porcine and bovine heparin. These results suggest the necessity of an establishment of individual specification for bovine heparin for safety before the re-introduction of bovine heparin into the market.
