Abstract

The Chinese game market has expanded rapidly over the past two decades. In 2022, China generated the highest game revenues in the world, attracting sustained interest from both domestic and international game companies. Yet despite its scale, the Chinese market remains difficult for international developers to enter. Beyond language and localization, companies must contend with distinctive player practices shaped by local conditions and a regulatory system characterized by strict censorship and ideological oversight. These challenges have produced a persistent disconnect between the Chinese game industry and global markets. Understanding the historical development of the Chinese game industry and the logic behind state regulation is therefore essential for engaging with the Chinese gaming landscape. This research aims to examine in depth the cultural impact of Internet cafés on contemporary Chinese society, emphasizing their historical evolution and socio-cultural significance. Because this topic involves both lived experiences and contextual understanding, it requires extensive data collection from current Chinese residents alongside attention to historical and cultural frameworks. To obtain comprehensive and credible data while minimizing research bias, this study adopts a multi-method approach designed to capture the breadth, depth, and complexity of the phenomenon. Given the intertwined cultural, social, and behavioral dimensions of Internet café practices, ethnographic methodology is identified as the most appropriate framework for this research. Ethnography allows for immersive engagement and contextual interpretation, making it particularly effective in understanding how individuals experience, perform, and negotiate cultural meanings within these social spaces. Accordingly, this study employs three distinct yet complementary methods of data collection, survey, interview and participant observation, contributing uniquely to the analysis and enriching the overall interpretive depth of the research. This dissertation investigates the reciprocal relationships among Internet cafés, player practices, industrial strategies, and regulatory frameworks. It examines how Internet cafés structured everyday gaming behaviors and habits, how game companies adapted design choices and business models in response to café-based play, and how these spaces became focal points in governmental governance and public debate surrounding video games. Through this lens, the dissertation positions Internet cafés as foundational sites where cultural meaning, market logic, and state power intersect. Accordingly, this study is guided by the following research questions: 1. How have Internet cafés shaped Chinese players’ gaming behaviors, habits, and social practices? 2. How have Internet cafés facilitated, constrained, or complicated the development of the Chinese game industry, and how has the industry responded to these challenges and opportunities? 3. What role have Internet cafés played in shaping governmental regulation and public discourse on gaming, particularly in influencing the perceptions of non-gamers, parents, educators, and other authorities?
