Abstract
Gas turbine engines typically operate at temperatures high enough to spontaneously generate nitrogen oxides through various chemical mechanisms. The combustion byproducts are considered a significant source of environmental pollution and reduction of such emissions is a topic of contemporary research. In addition to pollution, the high temperature operation of these engines also necessitates the use of heat resistant materials for engine components. High temperatures can damage or wear engine components, increasing replacement and maintenance costs.
