Abstract
This thesis explores the relationship between built space and power. It begins with a personal narrative followed by readings of space from a feminist lens. The feminist perspective gives way to analyzing both manifestations of power in the built environment of the city and the absence of certain narrative, specifically those pertaining to the telling of stories about women, people of color, and working class people. Following the theoretical analysis of the conditions surrounding space and power there is a lengthy section describing projects aimed at dismantling the power structures set in place to silence and exclude certain users of the city. This thesis serve3s as the written documentation for nearly two and a half years of on going collaboration, spanning from mid 2004 to late 2006. All of the projects presented in this thesis where done in Troy, NY.
