Abstract
Previous research has examined the relationship between playing video games and different cognitive abilities. This dissertation investigated if playing the video game Tetris leads to enhanced cognitive abilities as measured by different cognitive tasks. In this work, we used a cross-sectional method to compare the performance of expert and novice Tetris players on different cognitive tasks measuring processing speed, inhibition, and attention. We also used a longitudinal intervention method to compare changes in cognitive abilities related to processing speed, attention, and visuospatial working memory for individuals with limited and extensive experience playing Tetris. These studies showed that playing Tetris enhances attention and, to some extent, reaction time. We discuss what it is about Tetris that facili- tates these changes in cognitive abilities. We also discuss how experience with a task changes the relationship between cognitive abilities and performance over time and its implications for training.
