Abstract
An efficient acid functionalization method that involves mild iridium-catalyzed aromatic C-H borylation and subsequent Suzuki-Miyaura coupling with phenyl bromide acid precursors was developed for preparation of ionic polymers based on poly(styrene-b-ethylene/butylene-b-styrene). Aryl sulfonic acid and phosphonic acid were incorporated into the aromatic ring of polystyrene block of the polymer with maximum efficiency resulting in ionomers with theoretical ion exchange capacity of 1.94 and 3.78 mequiv/g, respectively, for sulfonated and phosphonated polymers. The membrane properties such as water uptake, thermal stability, proton conductivity, and membrane nanostructure were studied to investigate the relationship of acid structures and polymer properties.
