Abstract
This dissertation consists of two distinct but related essays on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and firm strategy. In the first essay, we draw upon two sub-categories of the stakeholder management perspective; strategic and intrinsic. These perspectives are useful in clarifying the conditions under which firm strategies correlate with the employment of greater portions of philanthropy in cash versus in-kind donations. In the second essay, we consider whether the potential value-enhancing effect of CSR is significant in the merger and acquisition (M&A) market. Specifically, we examine the propensity for CSR performance to affect the attractiveness of an M&A target as well as the market's response to the acquisition of CSR firms.
