Abstract
Recently, acoustic-electric (AE) channels have been used to transmit power and data wirelessly through metallic enclosures, where the structural integrity of the enclosure needs to be preserved and feed-throughs are not wanted. In many applications, it is desirable to utilize techniques which minimize power consumption to sustain reliable long term operation. Since acoustic electrical channels exhibit frequency selectivity, wide-band modulation schemes can be employed to achieve acceptable performance without adapting to the channel response. In this thesis, an MSP430 microcontroller is used to provide an efficient and cost effective solution to implementing a communication system for acoustic-electric channels. A direct sequence spread spectrum (DSSS) on-off keyed communication system is implemented and employed, while minimizing transmission power. Using the DSSS communication system, data rates of up to 2 kbits/s and error rates on the order of 〖10〗^(-7) were achieved during testing of the low rate communication system.
