Abstract
The task of the thesis is to locate the MFA thesis animation, Kakooza, within a personal, political and art historical context expanding the canon of contemporary African Art before the 1980’s. It documents the development of the animation beginning with the rediscovery of an unpublished PhD dissertation by my uncle George Kakooza. I have carefully considered the legacy of Kakooza becoming the first Ugandan to head the Fine Arts Department at Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda and provide background on his influences and Buganda art. I analyze the MFA thesis animation by describing the use of source material drawn from my historical research. The thesis concludes with a discussion of my plans to do further research in family archives to preserve his legacy and make it accessible to others in the future.
